starburst galaxy

A galaxy in which there is thought to be an exceptionally high rate of star formation. Starburst galaxies are characterized by excessive emission of infrared radiation, which may account for over 90 per cent of their total energy flux. These "infrared galaxies" were discovered during a survey carried out in 1983 by IRAS, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite.
